Beat Stress's something we all hear about often and know all to well.  For me, it sneaks in many different ways, such as putting too much on my schedule, or procrastinating on something and then stressing and rushing to get it done at the last minute.  Statistics for stress don't look very promising either.  According to, American adults are actually becoming more and more stressed, instead of less.  So, keeping that in mind, here are some ways you can decrease your stress levels.

  1. Start with recognizing stress in your life and where it is coming from...what's causing it.  For me, one high level of stress was training my horse to the next dressage level...was showing absolutely necessary?
  2. Prioritize - make lists, decide what absolutely needs doing and make time to do it.
  3. Take time to breathe and relax, even if it's only for 5 minutes at a time.  We can't all be at the barn all day long!
  4. Go to the barn - get outdoors.  Get away from your computer, phone, tv and get some sunshine!
  5. Delegate - don't be the martyr and take on all the chores at home and at the barn.  Get everyone involved.  While you are at the barn, get the kids involved in household chores, simplify meals.
  6. Make time for fun things.  Do things you and your loved ones enjoy on a regular basis away from the barn.
  7. Plan ahead.  There isn't anything more stressful than finding yourself unprepared when you could have been.
  8. Laugh and have fun.  I'm always surprised how much happier and freer I am when I choose to let things not offend me and laugh instead.
  9. Make chores fun.  Set time limits so everyone knows there is an end in sight to those chores - even barn chores.
  10. Sip a cup of relaxing tea!
  11. Do something different with your horse.  This past weekend, I tried jousting and had a great time.  It was great to get away from that dressage arena.
  12. Do not over commit.  Simplify your life and responsibilities can reduce stress greatly.
  13. Get plenty of sleep!
  14. Be thankful - mentally take time to give thanks for the good things in your life!
  15. Exercise - a great stress reducer - get your heart going.
